In both instances below it is imperative to have your shoulders match the slope angle, this can be done with a club across your shoulders and tilt your spine until it matches the angle of the slope.
- Uphill Lie Effects: This awkward lie restricts the ability of the lower body to rotate. This restriction causes the forearm rotation and release to be over exaggerated through impact resulting in a closed club face on impact. The effect on the ball is an anti-clock wise spin resulting in a right to left curvature.
- How to Play The Uphill Lie: Place the ball further back in one stance with more weight being placed on the left foot at address and ensure your hands are slightly ahead of the ball. This steepens your angle of approach which will lessen the side spin imparted on the ball. The earlier the golf ball is impacted in the swing the less time the Club Face has to close.
- Down Hill Lie Effects: The slope of the ground causes the lowest point in the swing to occur earlier causing a shallower angle of approach which can result in a thin or even topped shot.
- How To Play The Downhill Lie: Again, the ball would need to be moved back in one’s stance and you weight placed more on the front foot. This will result in contact being made with the ball earlier. The result however is that the Club Face will be slightly open on impact. When setting up to play the shot, aim slightly left of the intended target line. Don’t forget however, the ball will have a lower launch angel which results in it being harder for the ball to stop.

6. Golf Rules & Handicapping: Make The Rules Work For You
Rules/Course Knowledge Episode 1
Welcome to our rules and course knowledge education series. Even if you know the rules, it is always great to get a refresher and our intention is to try and simplify some of the rules for you. We then will apply these to some Selborne holes as well as situations that have come up whilst playing this great game of golf.
As the rules are intricately linked to what part of the golf course your ball is on, we start with understanding the five areas that are defined in the rules and make up the course:
- The general area (GA)
- The teeing area (the area the player must play from in starting the hole they are playing)
- All penalty areas (PA)
- All bunkers
- The putting green (of the hole the player is playing)
Areas not on the course are Out of Bounds (OB).
The rules say your ball can only ever be on one part of the course – “if part of the ball is in both the General Area and one of the other four specific areas of the course, it is treated as lying in that specific area of the course”. In addition, if part of your ball lies in two of the other four specific areas then it is lying in the area that comes first in this order: penalty area, bunker, green.
Let’s use some examples.
- Part on the green and part on the fairway. Your ball is on the green.
- Part touching a red penalty line and part in the rough. Your ball is in the penalty area.
- Part on the fairway and part in a bunker. Your ball is in the bunker.
- Part on the fairway and part in the rough. Your ball is on the fairway.
