3. Golf Course Update: Let’s Go Green!

As I’m sure most of you are aware, Selborne embarked on its annual overseeding (overseeding is the planting of bent grass seeds into our existing greens without tearing or damaging the established grass or turning over the soil).

The fruits of this labour were quickly apparent, with visible signs of seed germination emerging by the 25th of March. In response to this promising growth, our diligent maintenance team promptly administered a preventative fungicide spray to safeguard against the threat of pythium root rot.

This precautionary measure is particularly crucial for seedlings, which are susceptible to rotting when subjected to the necessary watering regimen during their two-week establishment period. It’s a delicate balance, ensuring adequate hydration without risking the onset of rot. Yet, with the expertise and dedication of our team, we can navigate these challenges and nurture Selborne’s flourishing greenery to its fullest potential.

If you look carefully, you will see almost a yellow in colour pocket of grass sprouting out.  This is the bent grass seedlings.

4. Pro Tips: Mastering Your Swing: Let’s Start With The Basics

IMPROVE YOUR GAME WITH THESE EXPERT TIPS FROM THE PRO:

  • Focus on Fundamentals: Mastering the basics is key to a consistent and reliable swing. Spend time practicing your grip, stance, and alignment.  One of the most neglected aspects in golf is having the correct grip size.  The hands and grip act as the vital link between the golfer and the club, playing a fundamental role in optimizing contact with the ball for improved consistency and performance. Here are some key considerations to ensure your grip is dialled in:
  • Correct Grip Size: It’s essential to ensure your grip is the appropriate width for your hands. When gripping the club, your two middle fingers should gently touch the palm of your hand. This ensures a snug yet comfortable fit.
  • Avoid Grip Too Small: If the grip is too small for your hands, you may find yourself gripping the club too tightly. This can lead to a loss of distance and accuracy, as excessive tension in the hands hampers the fluidity of your swing.
  • Beware of Grip Too Big: Conversely, an oversized grip can also pose problems. It may result in reduced club head speed through impact and compromised accuracy. With a larger grip, it becomes challenging to square the clubface at impact, affecting the direction of your shots.
  • Stay Relaxed: Tension in your body can lead to poor performance. Focus on staying relaxed and fluid throughout your swing.
  • Visualize Success: Before you take your shot, visualize the perfect outcome. Positive visualization can help boost your confidence and improve your performance.
  • Let’s Get Fitted: Should you be struggling with your grip, feel free to pop into the Proshop and we will gladly assist you.

Tournament Results: Players That Rose To The Top

As many of you may be aware, Selborne recently launched its official Par 3 Course which was a great success.  We had an impressive field of almost 60 players.  Weather conditions weren’t in the golfers favour as strong winds on the day greeted our golfers.  Nevertheless, everyone took up the challenge and well done to Billy Prichard and Miles Cripps who emerged champions on the day with and impressive Betterball score of 46 points.

A big thank you goes out to Gary Leader who on behalf of Golf RSA came out and did the course rating with Leanne Parsons and Ryan Johnson.  Gary snuck Selborne ahead of the list to ensure Selborne was one of the first if not the first Golf Club to have their shortened course live on HNA.

6. Golf Rules & Handicapping: Make The Rules Work For You

Course Markings / Demarcations

  • Please note that players must make sure that if the choose to play on the 16th hole, it’s safe to do so, and the Club will except no liability for any injury to person or property.
  • The Handicap Committee and Greenkeeping staff are working hard to ensure all boundary markers and penalties areas are clearly demarcated. With that said, please note that the internal out of bounds behind the 14th green and right of the 17th fairway have been amended to only be out-of-bounds around the house permitters which also cross the road in line with the houses.

Scores / Scoring

  • Whilst we are hard at work ensuring the course is presented in the best possible condition to our members and visitors, we ask in return that scorecards are completed correctly and accurately.
  • Please ensure before teeing off that a round has been opened and on completion of your round, you have 24 hours to capture your score. Should you be unable to, please contact the Golf Club immediately and make them aware of the issue.  No penalty rounds will be removed after the 24 hour period.
  • Ensure you as the player have agreed with your marker on the number of shots played and results scored. Players are to accurately capture these scores on the HNA system.
  • As per the WHS update in January 2024, Please note that when playing a Matchplay round only scores achieved in the match play may be entered.
  • The first change relates to the calculation of the Playing Handicap.

In a match, the number of shots given is calculated on the difference in the Course Handicap and then the Handicap Allowance (HA) percentage is applied to that.

  • The second change relates to GolfRSA clarifying what score is valid when playing Match Play.

Only scores achieved in the match play competition may be entered.

The scores of holes played after the match has been decided is regarded as “social” and may not be entered.  The gross score for each of the holes played in the Match is entered on the hole-by-hole score entry feature on the HNA System.  And the holes after the match is concluded should be marked as not played whether they were played or not.
